Law, Religion, and Human Rights (841M3)
Law, Religion, and Human Rights
Module 841M3
Module details for 2022/23.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
The role of religion in society and its interaction with human rights law is increasingly under the spotlight, in part, as a result of the challenges posed by globalisation and immigration. The right to religious freedom of minorities is interfered with by religious and secular states, alike. However, religion frequently serves as a pretext for human rights violations, particularly in relation to freedom of expression, women's rights and minority rights (including LGBTQI). This module explores the relationship between law, human rights, and religion in their societal and political context, with an emphasis on theoretical perspectives and substantive law (at an international, regional and national level).
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the relationship, interaction and tension between religion and human rights law.
Critically analyse juridical cases on ‘law and religion’ and evaluate their practical implications on social and state policy
Develop in depth analytical, and critical, research skills as well as the ability to analyse legal and political issues in context
Articulate beliefs on religion and human rights with critical self-awareness regarding complex legal issues and demonstrate ability to assess and integrate challenges and criticism
