Module Outline

This module begins with an introduction to the policies and principles surrounding international environmental law including an examination of the historical development of the subject area; the sources and participants found within international environmental law; and issues surrounding compliance and enforcement. Following this, the course will examine a range of substantive issues of contemporary global importance including: climate change; the conservation of biological diversity; the law of impact assessment; liability; international economic institutions & environmental protection; international trade, development & the environment; and the relationship between human rights and the environment.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate in-depth familiarity with the fundamental policies and principles found within international environmental law

Demonstrate awareness and critical understanding of the way in which the main international environmental regimes operate

Place international environmental law in the context of the wider international legal system and critically understand the various inter-relationships (e.g. between international environmental and human rights, international economic law etc.)

Critically analyse the future challenges for international environmental law
