Module Outline
This module offers students the unique opportunity to build on the law and theory learnt in the postgraduate modules on ‘Approaches to International Law’ and ‘International Human Rights Law’ (core modules in the recently validated degree in International Human Rights Law) through the preparation of pro bono legal opinions for real clients. Students will work under the supervision of the module convenor on specific legal questions related to international human rights law coming from clients, such as international organisations, governments, or non-governmental organisations. Depending on the complexity and nature of the legal opinions sought, students will work individually or in small groups to produce memoranda for their clients, following a process of consultation with clients, close supervision, oversight and review by the module convenor, seminar discussions on work in progress, and presentations to clients of draft memoranda. Students will thereby apply research and writing skills to the analysis and application of facts and law to real situations, as well as develop oral presentation skills. Although the module will seek to enhance students’ ability to present and tailor advice to clients, the module will ultimately function as a pedagogical exercise to train students in the practice and application of international human rights law.
Module learning outcomes
Critically analyse, evaluate and apply international human rights law to real-life human rights questions.
Use a variety of legal research methods in the preparation of legal memoranda on real-life human rights questions.
Critically transfer knowledge gained in the international human rights law course to real-life questions concerning the promotion and protection of human rights.
Reflect upon progress made in the preparation of issues papers and draft legal memoranda through engagement with fellow students, the module convenor and clients.
