Module Outline
This Module enables students to explore under supervision an area of law of their choice with view to completing a dissertation project. Students will be expected to initiate and develop a research project. Through this they will gain a systematic understanding of key aspects of their chosen area of research including acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge, at least some of which is at the forefront of study of the legal area. Students will need to exercise initiative and personal responsibility to manage their own learning, making use of scholarly reviews and primary sources appropriate to their chosen area of research. Students must demonstrate the ability to deploy accurately established techniques of analysis and enquiry to their chosen field of study and to evidence the ability to describe and comment upon particular aspects of current research in the discipline.
Module learning outcomes
Plan and execute a substantial research project in any area of law within the expertise of a member of faculty, drawing on a variety of different source materials;
Ensure that all research work, whether empirical or academic, is carried out in a professional and ethical manner, and in accordance with appropriate methodological principles;
Demonstrate critical awareness of relevant concepts, principles and rules in the chosen area of law;
Act autonomously in appraising and critiquing relevant sources through independent research.
