Additional Learning Tasks
Students of this level 4 course will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the subject; develop some of the key legal skills required for a reading and understanding of the law; and, demonstrate familiarity with the key concepts and principles of the study of the English Legal System. They will be able to follow instructions in relation to their learning and also demonstrate some responsibility for their learning.
Module Outline
This module covers use of the library and electronic resources reading cases, statutes and academic literature. Students learn how to produce fully referenced academic work among the other skills necessary to help them study law. They learn about the doctrine of judicial precedent and the principles involved in interpreting legislation. This module gives the students the opportunity to focus very narrowly and examine in detail how to find a ratio and to see the English Legal System in a broader context by critically examining the structures, process and personnel of the English Legal System.
Module learning outcomes
Identify and recall the structure and personnel of the English Legal System, sources of law, precedent, different approaches to statutory interpretation, the impact of the Human Rights Act and EU Law on English law as well as the process of law reform.
Recognise and demonstrate an understanding of relevant legal concepts.
Find and interpret the law, literary sources, cases and legislation using the library and electronic resources and the ability to produce academic work which follows recognised academic conventions in relation to referencing
