Module Outline
This module examines practical and normative aspects of the criminal process and criminal procedures, with specific emphasis on institutions and actors within the criminal justice system (eg the police; CPS; the Magistrates’ Court; the Crown Court; legal aid; jury trial; the Court of Appeal; the CCRC). The module offers a socio-legal approach to explore how the criminal process operates in practice.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of different aspects of criminal processes, including acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge
Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of law, policy and practice in relation to the institutions of the criminal process
Discuss – through case studies – contemporary challenges within, and to, the criminal process
Develop socio-legal knowledge and understanding of the criminal process in action
