Module Outline
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the most important rules and principles of Adult Family Law. It outlines the rules on marriage, unmarried cohabitation and civil partnership, domestic violence, divorce, child support, financial provision on divorce and alternative modes of family dispute resolution. It also reflects upon the central principles that frame adult family law, including autonomy, privacy and freedom from discrimination. But the module does not only reflect on the rules and principles of adult family law. It also considers the application of those rules and principles in the social and political contexts in which they operate. The module requires students to think about the nature of the family relationships of adults in our society and how they ought to be regulated in law; it will encourage students to think about the appropriateness of the rules that govern adult families. The module will, for these reasons, be both theoretical and extremely practical.

Systematically explain, analyse and apply the important legal principles and rules affecting adult family law.
Systematically explain and analyse the most important policy considerations that underpin the rules and principles governing adults sharing a family life
Present a reasoned argument in which the rules of adult family law are applied
Demonstrate the ability to initiate and undertake independent research to develop critical perspectives on adult family law
