Human Rights 2: Critical Perspectives

Module M6067

Module details for 2022/23.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 6

Module Outline

This module builds on previous coverage of human rights in the curriculum to interrogate the concept of rights as opposed to (just) the law on rights. Students will be asked to critically interrogate the nature, use and future(s) of rights from a range of critical perspectives using a variety of contemporary case studies. Note that the study of Human Rights 1 is not a pre-requisite, although it is recognised that many students will choose to study both modules together.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate a deep and systematic understanding of the history, relevance and contemporary significance of human rights

Explain and critically evaluate different doctrinal and philosophical approaches to human rights

Systematically appreciate the relationship between theoretical approaches to rights and the practical manifestation of human rights

Extend and apply theoretical knowledge to human rights, to consider contemporary debates around alternative perspectives on rights
