Module Outline

In further developing the understanding and application of the legal principles introduced and analysed in Sports Law 1, this module will begin by covering issues of tort law in the specific context of sport. This includes the civil liability of participants, coaches, referees and National Governing Bodies of Sport. Examination of the intersection between sport and the criminal law will focus on applicable offences, the role of consent to violence in sport and, matters concerning public disorder, racism and hooliganism. The module will also critically consider the liability for dangerous premises and dangerous events, with additional scrutiny of stadium disasters and spectator safety in sport. Furthermore, employment contracts in sports will be analysed, with particular emphasis on the relationship between sportsmen and sportswomen and their employers.
