Law (with a study abroad year)
(LLB) Law (with a study abroad year)
Entry for 2026
FHEQ level
This course is set at Level 6 in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.
Course Aims
In addition to the stated aims of the LLB degree at Sussex, the programme aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of law in England and Wales and one other jurisdiction, the latter element being studied in that jurisdiction, as well as to provide the educational and cultural experience of a Year Abroad and enable students to contribute to the international mission of the University through this aspect of the programme.
Key elements of student achievement:
1. Students will graduate with critical, analytical and creative skills to help them to understand and respond to the complexities and challenges presented by the inter-relationship of law and society in an ever-changing world.
2. Students completing the programme will achieve an understanding of issues of law in a foregin jurisdiction and an understanding of comparative legal studies. They will benefit from the significant research and teaching experience of SLS academics interested in a broad range of international, European and comparative legal issues.
3. Students will achieve an understanding of another jurisdiction which will also enrich their understanding of developments within the English Legal System as well as gaining the wider academic, cultural and social benefits associated with study abroad.
4. Students will satisfy the requirements of the benchmarking statements for Law. The award constitutes a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD), so that successful students will have completed the academic stage of training to become a solicitor or a barrister.
Special points of interest:
The programme will not recruit separately. Students undertaking the LLB (with or without a minor) will be given an opportunity during their first year to elect to include a year of study abroad on their programme. These students will then be switched to the LLB Law with Study Abroad programme. As we are selecting as partner universities those who offer law teaching in English, the requirement of a year abroad is not restricted to those who are proficient in another language, thus creating opportunities for students which would not otherwise be available at Sussex.
Accreditation Marketing Text
This course satisfies the academic component of Bar training (subject to minimum pass marks and number of attempts).
