Module Outline
Turkey is a country that has been characterised by a downward trend towards authoritarianism and has received extensive attention in the past decades for various reasons such as the process to negotiate its access to the EU, the Gezi protests, the recent military coup, the Kurdish issue, its role in the migration crisis and its foreign policy. These issues are the outcomes of the country’s turbulent political history and current internal dynamics which have been shaped by a volatile and deeply fragmented social and political environment.
The module’s main objective is to analyse the origins and consequences of the political, social and cultural dynamics that develop within Turkish politics. In doing so, we will be looking at the country’s political regime, electoral system, parties and voters, civil society and its relationship with external actors.
Module learning outcomes
Illustrate in-depth knowledge of the Turkish historical framework and how this has shaped Modern Turkish politics
Demonstrate an appreciation of the conflictual dynamics that characterize the socio-political environment of the country (with a focus on actors, institutions, and processes).
Develop an understanding of the contemporary challenges Turkey faces both domestically and internationally
Critically evaluate and analyse academic research on Turkey as well as develop well informed and compelling arguments in respect to key topics covered in the module.
