Module Outline

This module draws on feminist theory, human rights theory, anthropological and historical materials and rights instruments and documentation. The first half provides a theoretical framework for the study of women's human rights. Examining different theoretical perspectives on the origins of women’s rights; decolonial critiques of a linear views of rights development; feminist critiques of rights; and debate over the use of rights strategies for the empowerment of women; including international implementation of women’s rights. The second half of the module consists of topics which focus on the conception, implementation, adherence and breach of a specific right or related rights.

Module learning outcomes

Articulate an understanding of the historical origins of women’s rights and the theoretical debates surrounding the contemporary use of human rights for women.

Appraise the different legal and political approaches to the implementation of women’s rights.

Demonstrate a general ability to analyse human rights from a gender perspective and to appreciate the implications of that analysis for the implementation of specific rights in relation to women.

Synthesize theoretical perspectives on women’s human rights and apply to a specific area of self-initiated research.
