Law, Religion, and Human Rights

Module 841M3

Module details for 2024/25.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)

Module Outline

The role of religion in society and its interaction with human rights law is increasingly under the spotlight, in part, as a result of the challenges posed by globalisation and immigration. The right to religious freedom of minorities is interfered with by religious and secular states, alike. However, religion frequently serves as a pretext for human rights violations, particularly in relation to freedom of expression, women's rights and minority rights (including LGBTQI). This module explores the relationship between law, human rights, and religion in their societal and political context, with an emphasis on theoretical perspectives and substantive law (at an international, regional and national level).

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the relationship, interaction and tension between religion and human rights law.
