Module Outline
The aim of this module is to give you some direct experience of carrying out a small-scale empirical research project, from the initial stages of design to the final stages of presenting your findings. It is intended to help you consolidate and build upon the knowledge base you gained from the research methods modules in the second year, as you will use these skills to research a topic of your choice. You will be assessed on how well you interpret and apply the relevant methodological issues to your research design, manage the practical side of the project, address ethical issues, and reflect on the effectiveness of your chosen strategies.
Module learning outcomes
Design and carry out a small-scale empirical research project on a specific topic.
Critically reflect upon the effectiveness of their research design, in terms of its methodological rigour, ethical defensibility and contribution to a field of enquiry.
Present and communicate research findings to an academic audience
Demonstrate practical skills of project management, self-directed study and independent learning
Understand and address the ethical risks and issues arising from their chosen research design.
