Race, Culture and the Media
Module 881P4
Module details for 2023/24.
30 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
This module explores the intersection of race, culture and the media. It begins by looking at the origins of these debates–modernity, racism and capitalism – and the tradition in which we will work – cultural studies. It then moves on to explore the visual, sonic and digital dimensions of the subject. Within each of these, some foundational notions are tackled, for example race, whiteness and postcoloniality. Other sessions open up more topical areas of interest, for example on drones, or bass culture. In each, students are asked to consider how race and mediation (visual, sonic and digital) relate to popular culture and what is at stake in these relations. Students taking this course should have an interest in race and postcolonialism, and a curiosity for a cultural studies approach to these questions.
