New Developments in Digital Media
Module 804P4B
Module details for 2023/24.
30 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
This module explores different approaches through which it is possible to understand new developments in digital media. Students will focus on the computational character of digital technologies: they will address sociocultural forms that rely on computing, and will consider how these increase the space and reach of algorithmic operations via software and data structures. The module analyses processes of transformation and change, questioning what novelty and progress in technoscience and technoculture are. The module is however also concerned with understanding the continuity of media and mediation, engaging with historical perspectives on computational culture and its core concepts, theories and practices.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of how computational technologies impact on debates about change and innovation in culture and society.
Critically synthesise and evaluate current research and scholarship in computational technologies, systems and contents.
Apply conceptual frameworks, critical analysis and practical skills in the production of a creative digital project.
Demonstrate originality and self-direction in addressing both theoretical and practice-oriented questions in digital media studies.
