Module Outline

This module examines the roles played by financial institutions in the global financial market structure and the ways in which these institutions manage risks in their investments, with a particular focus on management of operational risk. It addresses investment banking and the roles banks and other market participants such as rating agencies play in the financial markets. The module gives detailed exploration of the nature of operational risk and the way risk management is practiced in financial services firms. It compares and contrasts the prevailing regulatory approaches and provide in-depth discussions on the international frameworks for regulating and managing operational risk. The process of compliance with these regulations is discussed using both lectures and case study materials. The module also includes discussions of corporate scandals, the role of the financial media, and prospects for future regulations
