Galaxies and the Cosmos (F3305)
Galaxies and the Cosmos
Module F3305
Module details for 2025/26.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 5
Module Outline
This module gives an overview of the properties of galaxies, their spatial distribution (large-scale structure) and the nature of the Universe as a whole (cosmology).
Galaxies: morphology and spatial distribution; formation and evolution.
Cosmology: observational evidence; the big bang and inflation; Friedmann equations; dark energy
Module learning outcomes
Have knowledge of and be able to critically evaluate the principal observational properties of galaxies.
Explain how these observations inform our physical understanding of galaxies, groups/clusters of galaxies, and the Universe.
Apply physical laws to make calculations that relate the observed properties of systems to their underlying physical properties.
Have a broad understanding of the key cosmological and astrophysics process that give rise to galaxy formation and evolution.
