Beyond the Standard Model
Module 901F3
Module details for 2025/26.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
In this module you will critically investigate the structure of the Standard Model of particle physics, including its predictions for electroweak scattering processes and the interactions of the Higgs boson. You will examine the shortcomings and questions that the Standard Model of particle physics leaves unresolved. You will explore some of the most promising new physics extensions. This could include scalar and gauge group extensions, grand unification, supersymmetry, Kaluza-Klein models of extra-dimensions, the axion solution to the strong CP problem, or effective field theories.
Module learning outcomes
explain key predictions and shortcomings of the Standard Model.
demonstrate knowledge of extensions of the Standard Model and their theoretical formulation, and apply these to relevant problems.
