The first and second examiners each assign a mark to the Project Report using copies of the first/second examiner form (attached) and fill in all the sections of their Project Assessment forms. The examiners then record agreed marks using the joint form (also attached), and draft on it a brief joint statement justifying the final mark. Assessment of the Project Report When assessing the Project Report, the examiners will assign a percentage mark for each of the following. The final mark for the Project Report is calculated using the weights indicated. Originality and independence of the work (worth 30%) 95100%: the project is of publishable quality in a mathematical publication. 7094%: the candidate has drawn his/her own conclusions which are of interest for mathematicians or students studying the subject. 55-69%: the candidate has extended the source material by giving corollaries, special cases or examples; if numerical work is involved, has used his/her own code at least in part. 4054%: the candidate has explained the known results or proofs in his/her own way, which proves his/her understanding of the subject. 3039%: the candidate has attempted to present his/her interpretation of the known results, demonstrating some understanding of the subject. 1529%: the candidate has done no or very little independent work but has shown some potential for doing this in the future. 014%: the candidate has done no or very little independent work and has shown no potential for doing any in the future. Mastery and understanding of the topic (worth 30%) 70100%: a comprehensive and well presented account of the subject matter, which is clearly understood by the student. 6069%: good understanding of the subject, perhaps with some minor misunderstandings. 5059%: limited understanding accompanied by significant misunderstandings. 4049%: some parts of the project are understood well, others have major misunderstandings. 3039%: work of some merit but with substantial misunderstandings. 1529%: work fails to address the issues in any serious or competent fashion, but shows potential for being able to do so in the future. 014%: work fails to address the issues in any serious or competent fashion, and shows no potential for being able to do so in the future. The extent to which the topic is dealt with (worth 30%) 90100%: the candidate has independently made a good selection of sources and provided a very full coverage of the project. 7089%: the same as above but the candidate used only the sources recommended by his/her supervisor. 5069%: a good coverage of the project with some omissions. 4049%: an uncertain coverage, some parts may be covered well, others have major omissions. 3039%: work of some merit but with substantial omissions. 1529%: muddled, or totally unsatisfactory/perfunctory work, but showing potential for relevant and competent work in the future. 014%: muddled, or totally unsatisfactory/perfunctory work, showing no potential for relevant or competent work in the future. Written presentation (worth 10%) When judging the written presentation take into account the following: (i) quality of the abstract, (ii) quality of the concluding section, (iii) adequacy of the bibliography and referencing, (iv) coherence and aesthetics of the presentation.
