Module Outline

This module aims to provide you with the personal and academic development skills necessary for effective study at undergraduate level in the Arts and Social Sciences. It will also enable you to develop an active, independent approach to learning and the ability to assess, monitor and evaluate your own development.

The module is designed to ensure that you will take full advantage of the opportunities offered by your degree programme through a variety of learning activities. These include lectures, seminars and workshops in:

• Critical thinking
• Critical reading and note-taking
• The process of academic writing
• Making the most of academic tutorials and understanding feedback
• Effective literature searching
• Presentation, negotiating and debating skills
• Intercultural communication skills

Module learning outcomes

Use a range of strategies for managing their studies effectively

Make decisions and communicate beliefs clearly and accurately on the basis of in-depth analysis of evidence

Identify their strengths and development needs through feedback on their academic work and through undertaking and presenting a small-scale research project

Implement a range of strategies for managing their time effectively and for developing an active, independent approach to learning
