This course is set at Level 6 in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

Course Aims

This degree pathway aims to provide an alternative entry route into the Mathematics Honours degrees for students who do not have the standard requirements for year 1 entry. The courses undertaken in year 0 of the programme provide the necessary background knowledge in mathematics for progression to the mathematics degree of choice.

Course learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: By the end of the year a successful student will be able to: demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of a core of A level maths topics including calculus, geometry and statistics; identify different methods of proof; relate statistical and quantitative methods to a business and financial context.

Intellectual Skill: By the end of the year a successful student will be able to: demonstrate an ability to understand logical argument and deductive reasoning.

Practical Skill: By the end of the year a successful student will be able to: independently research and compile short mathematical projects; create and conduct a presentation for a small audience.

Practical Skills: By the end of the year a successful student will be able to: apply mathematical methods and techniques in problem solving and modelling by selecting appropriate techniques.

Transferable Skills: By the end of the year a successful student will be able to: work independently and as part of a group; be practised at written and oral communication; be able to judge and adopt good codes of practice in their learning environment.
