Private student halls

Private student halls are owned and operated by a third-party company, rather than the University.

They’re very similar to university campus halls in that you get your own ensuite room – some offer shared and studio rooms too, plus communal spaces like kitchens and social areas. Your rent will usually cover utility bills (energy, water, and internet).

When deciding if this option is for you, you will also need to consider the length of contract that you are expected to sign. Currently most private halls of residence offer 50/51-week contracts. Some offer a shorter 44-week contract in addition to this.

There is a selection of private student halls across Brighton and Hove. Private student halls are external to the University so you will need to contact them directly for further information. They are open to all ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ students, both undergraduate and postgraduate.

Information on reporting a problem with students in your area

We have a responsibility to investigate any allegations reported concerning Sussex students living in privately rented accommodation in or around Brighton.

The University Private Sector and Community Liaison team based within Housing Services spend time in the local community, visiting our students in their private sector accommodation and meeting residents and community members at local community meetings. We work closely with our Community Ambassador team, who are a group of students working in the local community visiting Sussex student households to give advice and guidance on living in the private sector.

You can report a problem with students in your area using our community feedback form.

Community complaint process

Complaints about the conduct of students living in the city can be made to the University via the Housing Services team, or directly to Brighton and Hove City Council, Sussex Police or the Letting agent/Landlord of the property depending on the nature of the complaint.

The Housing services team role is to share advice and guidance with our students living in the local community. We do not have any enforcement or statutory powers; we can share information with the Student Discipline team to review if a serious allegation is made about a student in the community.

These are the steps we will follow if we receive a complaint:

1. Upon receiving a first allegation, we would initially ascertain if there any students registered at Sussex University living within the reported student household.

2. If a ÃÛèÖÊÓƵ student is identified within the household, we would write to that student advising them that we had received a complaint, outline the allegation and remind them of their community responsibilities.

3. If a second allegation is received, we will revisit the previous action and decide whether all information gathered will be passed to the University Student Discipline team for review.

Throughout this process we will also signpost the complaint to external agencies that can assist with their complaint, this could include their Landlord or Letting Agency, Local Authority or in some instances, Sussex Police.
